Estimates of lightning ground flash density in Australia and its relationship to thunder-days

چکیده

Lightning is a phenomenon that is highly variable in space and time. The derivation of reliable estimates of its activity, therefore, requires statistical averaging over a large area and a considerable number of years of observation. The lightning flash density, defined as the number of flashes of a specific type occurring on or over unit area in unit time, is widely used as a statistical description of lightning activity. This parameter is commonly expressed as a number of flashes per square kilometer per year (km-2 yr-1). Of greater interest for lightning protection purposes is the lightning ground flash density Ng – the number of flashes striking a unit area of the ground per unit time, preferably Aust. Met. Lightning flash density 1995–2010 in Brisbane, Australia

Observations of nearby lightning have been made in Brisbane, Australia (27.3oS, 153.0oE) from 1995 to 2010 using CGR3 and CGR4 lightning sensors and a 500 Hz CIGRE lightning flash counter, with the objective of measuring long-term lightning flash densities and their diurnal and annual variations. The observations with the CGR4 sensor covered a circular area around the sensor of about 400 km2. T...

Seasonal and latitudinal variations of lightning ground flash activity in Australia

Lightning, one of the most powerful forces in nature, once was mysterious, magical and feared as the great weapon of the Gods. Ancient Greeks feared lightning as it was believed to be hurled by Zeus, the king of the Gods. For the Vikings, lightning was produced by Thor as his hammer struck an anvil while riding his chariot across the sky. American Indians believed that lightning was caused by b...

Thunderstorm distribution and frequency in Australia

Thunderstorms are spectacular but hazardous weather phenomena which, together with tropical cyclones and bushfires, top the list of concerns in the Bureau of Meteorology’s Severe Weather Warning Services Program. Insurance-related claims arising from thunderstorms (wind, hail and flash flood damage) from 1967 to 1999 amount to about $A5 billion (Insurance Council of Australia 2000). The Sydney ...

Climatology of lightning activity in Australia: spatial and seasonal variability

A climatology of lightning ground flash density is examined for the Australian region based on 18 years of data. The dataset and methodology used are consistent with that of a previous study based on eight years of data. Lightning flash densities are obtained from two satellite instruments—the Lightning Imaging Sensor and the Optical Transient Detector. A climatological map of lightning ground ...

Warm Season Cloud-to-Ground Lightning–Precipitation Relationships in the South-Central United States

This study examines the relationship between cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning and surface precipitation using observations from six regions (each on the order of 10 000 km2), April through October (1989–93), in the southcentral United States. The relationship is evaluated using two different methods. First, regression equations are fit to the data, initially for only the CG lightning flash densit...
